Find an ENG1 doctor

Every MCA-approved doctor, on one map. Taken from the MCA's own list, never from a search engine.

Book the doctor, not the clinic

An ENG1 has to be done by a doctor the MCA has approved. The MCA lists named doctors, not clinics, so book the doctor by name. The colleague down the corridor may not be on the list.

When you ring, ask for the doctor by name and check they are doing ENG1s that week. Every entry here comes from the MCA’s own list. The MCA updates that list often, and doctors drop off it.

Accepted instead of an ENG1

The MCA accepts seafarer medicals from the countries below on UK ships, under MSN 1815 (M+F) Amendment 7. This is mostly useful if you hold one of these nationalities: the certificate is normally issued to that country’s own seafarers, by a doctor its maritime authority approves.

Check your flag first. MSN 1815 sets what UK-flagged ships accept. If your yacht flies another flag, including another Red Ensign flag, check that flag’s own rules before you rely on a non-UK medical.

  • Normally for that country's own nationals. The notice describes the certificate as one that "normally is issued to a national of that country, by a doctor approved by the maritime authority of that country, wherever they may be located". If you do not hold that nationality, plan for an ENG1.
  • These doctors issue their own country's seafarer medical, not an ENG1. The notice says to contact that country's maritime authority to be directed to an authorised doctor.
  • Carry an English translation if the certificate is not in English, so the Master and any surveyor can read any restrictions.
