Name all four stages, calculate UKC correctly (chart depth + tide − draft), and state what to do when the result is below the 1.5m minimum.
SOLAS V/34 Stage 1 — Appraisal. Check every information source required before planning the passage. Critical items (marked ★) are mandatory — skipping them triggers a consequence.

- → Notices to Mariners — weekly corrections checked: New wreck (T) not shown on your chart. You pass over it at LW.
- → Pilot books and sailing directions: Port approach restriction (draught limit at LW) not known until arrival.
- → Weather forecast — passage + 24h margin: Gale warning missed. Vessel sails into Beaufort 9 in the TSS.
- → Tidal atlas and tide tables: Insufficient tidal height at shallowest waypoint — vessel grounds.
- → Port entry guide — lights, buoys, signals: Port closed for dredging — no alternative berth identified.
- → Crew rest hours — STCW compliance: OOW falls asleep on watch. Vessel deviates 3 nm from planned track.
