Apply Paint Protection (Awlcare / Polymer)

Routine after vessel induction, using the approved onboard method.
Routine paint protection maintains the approved layer over a known topcoat. This is not paint correction. Identify the topcoat, the protection already present and the exact product before starting. Awlcare has its own hand-application method; another polymer or ceramic system does not inherit it. Mixing methods causes patchy cure, poor adhesion or a surface that must be stripped before the next coating job.

Procedure

Preparation
- —Washdown the hull and superstructure thoroughly. Paint protection applied over salt, dirt, or bird fouling locks the contaminant in — it does not clean.
- —Rinse completely and allow to dry. Surface must be fully dry before application.
- —Inspect paint surface in raking light for any scratches, chips, or damage. Mark these with tape for follow-up — protection goes over them, but they need a repair conversation with the captain or chief officer.

Application — Awlcare
- —Shake Awlcare well. Apply it by hand with the clean cotton applicator or cloth specified by Awlgrip. Never machine-apply it.
- —Awlgrip permits application in sun or shade and permits a large area before removal. Do not invent a 1 m² section limit or a fixed two-to-five-minute timer.
- —Allow the product to haze, then remove the haze with a separate clean cotton cloth.
- —Inspect water-run-off areas. Awlgrip notes that these areas may require multiple coats; follow the current TDS and the vessel's protection record.

Other polymer products
- —Do not apply Awlcare's method to another polymer merely because both products are wiped on and removed.
- —For Rokoat Yacht Paint & Protect, the live database still lacks a confirmed current TDS and SDS. Obtain both, complete the vessel assessment and use the product-specific preparation, working time, removal and cure instructions.
- —If the current sheets are not aboard, stop. A marketing lifespan or an old crew handover is not a working method.

Completion
- —Inspect the finished surface. Any missed areas, streaks, or uneven coverage — re-do that section immediately before the product fully cures.
- —Log the application: date, product used, areas covered. This matters when the next application is due and when the HOD asks what protection is on the hull.
- —Rinse and separate cloths used for protection from general cleaning cloths. Contaminated cloths left in the cleaning kit will cause problems.
Troubleshooting
Streaky or smeared finish
Cause: Uneven application or removal, a contaminated cloth, incompatible residue underneath, or use outside the selected product's working window
Fix: Stop and use the selected product's recovery instruction. Do not assume a fresh coat will re-wet every polymer system.
Dull or flat result rather than gloss
Cause: Contamination, moisture, incomplete removal or an underlying paint defect
Fix: Identify the topcoat and existing protection before doing more work. A protection product cannot correct damaged paint, and some topcoats must not be polished.
White residue in recesses and textured areas
Cause: Product cured in gaps before buffing
Fix: Use the coating manufacturer's approved removal method. Do not introduce IPA or another solvent without confirming compatibility with both the topcoat and the protection system.
Warnings
- ⚠Application conditions are product-specific. Awlgrip permits Awlcare in sun or shade; do not turn another product's temperature limit into an Awlcare rule
- ⚠Awlcare can remove the mild stains named by Awlgrip, but it is not scratch removal or abrasive paint correction
- ⚠Confirm the exact topcoat, existing protection and current data sheets before selecting any protection product
