Learn the boat's language
Every vessel has its own layout, but the basic language stays fairly consistent. An instruction is no use if you have to stop and translate every word.
Before you start
Some names vary from boat to boat. The terms here are the common ones; walk the vessel on joining and learn the names used on that boat.

The rule
Port and starboard stay with the vessel
Facing forward, port is the left side and starboard is the right. Do not rely on your own left and right as you move around. Port and starboard stay with the boat, whichever way you are facing.

The words you will hear on day one

Direction
Bow is the front, stern is the back. Forward means towards the bow; aft means towards the stern.
What goes wrong: Moving a fender towards whichever end happens to be behind you.

Inside the vessel
The floor is the deck or sole, the ceiling is the deckhead, a wall is a bulkhead and stairs are often companionways.

Key spaces
The bridge or wheelhouse is where the vessel is navigated. The transom is the aft face of the hull. The swim platform is the working and guest area at the stern on many yachts.

Names that vary
Passerelle, lazarette, tender garage, beach club, foredeck and side deck. Their position, and even the name crew use, can change between yachts.
What goes wrong: Nodding, walking away and guessing which locker or deck was meant.
Remember: If you do not understand an instruction, ask once and remember the answer. Guessing costs more time than asking.
